Where is the Gaol?

The Adelaide Gaol is located in Adelaide's north western park lands at:
18 Gaol Road,
Thebarton.
Gaol Road runs off the Port Road by the Police Barracks.
(Please note, when heading out of the city, there is no longer a right turn from Port Road into Gaol Road.)

There is plenty of free parking and the Gaol has been adapted to allow access for disabled visitors.

Gaol Tours were run by the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society which is a not for profit organisation and is run entirely by volunteers. The Society conducted the original and authentic Gaol Tours and is not affiliated with any privately run Gaol tour operators.

Day Self Guided Tours:

The Adelaide Gaol is open for self guided tours from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm every day except Saturdays, Good Friday and Christmas Day.
The last entry is at 3.30 PM as it will take you at least 90 minutes to explore this important historic site.

Day Guided Tours: (Cancelled - Refer Home Page for explanation)

Alternatively, take a guided history tour with one of our knowledgeable volunteer guides. They will tell you about the Gaol's history, its architecture, living conditions and some of the officers and prisoners who spent time at the Gaol.

Ghost tours are not suitable for visitors under 15 years of age.
Bookings are essential for all night tours.

Public Ghost Tours are held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

Museum

In conjunction with the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society Inc, the Department for Environment and Heritage has developed an interactive museum which allows all Gaol visitors to learn about the conditions, items and artefacts which were used during the Gaol's working life. The displays include uniforms, contraband, weapons and items used for prisoner punishment.

All of these displayed items are on loan from the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society Inc.

Recently, an archaeological site within the Gaol grounds has been excavated and opened to the public. This site tells the interesting story about Adelaide's earliest settlers.
