Where is the Gaol?

The Adelaide Gaol is located in Adelaide's north western park lands at:
18 Gaol Road,
Thebarton.
Gaol Road runs off the Port Road by the Police Barracks.

There is plenty of free parking and the Gaol has been adapted to allow access for disabled visitors.

Originally, all Adelaide Gaol Tours were run by the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society which is a not for profit organisation and is run entirely by volunteers. The Society conducted the original and authentic Adelaide Gaol Tours and is not affiliated with any privately run Gaol tour operator.

The AGPS long term working relationship with DEWNR was terminated in May 2013. This action was initiated by a small group of disgruntled volunteers.

Full details of their actions and the events leading up to this action can be viewed on our Home Page.

Day Self Guided Tours:

The Adelaide Gaol is open for self guided tours from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm every day except Saturdays, Good Friday and Christmas Day.
The last entry is at 3.30 PM as it will take you at least 90 minutes to explore this important historic site.

Day Guided Tours: (Not available at this time)

Alternatively, take a guided history tour with one of our knowledgeable volunteer guides. They will tell you about the Gaol's history, its architecture, living conditions and some of the officers and prisoners who spent time at the Gaol.

Public guided history tours are available on Sundays at 11.00 AM, 12.00 PM and 1.00 PM.

Private guided history tours can be arranged for groups on any day (minimum 12 people). To make a booking, please call the Gaol on 08 8231 4062 during normal business hours on Monday to Friday.

School and Disability groups are welcome although bookings are essential.

Hear about the Gaol's ghostly officers and inmates. Since the Gaol closed in 1988, their activities have been observed by many visitors. New sightings and additional stories of the Adelaide Gaol ghosts and their paranormal activity continue to occur.

Minimum group size for night tours is 12 people with a maximum of 20 people and tours usually take around two (2.0) hours.
Ghost tours are not suitable for visitors under 15 years of age.

Sale of Books and Souvenirs - These can now be purchased here

We sell a range of souvenirs and books. The proceeds assist the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society Inc. to continue their work in ensuring the Gaol continues as an important part of our heritage.

Museum

In conjunction with the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society Inc, the Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources has developed an interactive museum which allows all Gaol visitors to learn about the conditions, items and artefacts which were used during the Gaol's working life. The displays include uniforms, contraband, weapons and items used for prisoner punishment.

All of these displayed items are on loan from the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society Inc.

Recently, an archaeological site within the Gaol grounds has been excavated and opened to the public. This site tells the interesting story about Adelaide's earliest settlers.

Special Events & Functions (Not available at this time)

Throughout the year there has been a number of events run by the Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources and/or the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society Inc. These events were designed to promote the Gaol's facilities and increase awareness of its value in our heritage.
